How fast is NMEA 2000?

The data speed of NMEA 2000 depends on the baud rate selected for the network. The maximum data speed for NMEA 2000 is 250 kilobits per second (kbps) at a baud rate of 250 kbps. However, lower baud rates can be used for smaller networks or devices that do not require high data throughput.

The actual data speed of a NMEA 2000 network can vary depending on factors such as the number of devices on the network, the types of devices connected, and the length of the backbone cable. In general, NMEA 2000 networks are designed to operate at a speed that is sufficient for the types of data being transmitted, such as GPS data, depth information, and engine data.

It's important to note that NMEA 2000 is a high-speed data protocol compared to the older NMEA 0183 protocol, which has a maximum data speed of 4800 bits per second (bps).
